Interesting how you focused on the postal workers in an article mostly about the military. While it may be true that it is funded by the selling of stamps and sending packages, "<a href="" rel="nofollow">it’s currently borrowing from the Treasury to cover its mounting losses.</a>" That increases the growing deficit on the backs of all of us...as well as our children. Considering the national average salary in the U.S. is a little over $40K a year (<a href="" rel="nofollow">cited in 2010</a>), I would contest that postal workers are making FAR BETTER than a 'living wage.' If I had a choice I'd much rather take that difference from letter carriers and increase the salaries of our men and women serving in the military...but they don't have a powerful & corrupt union backing them.

USPS does not receive any taxpayer's money. ZERO. It is funded entirely through the sale of stamps. It employs 130,000 US Veterans, 49,000 of them are disabled. Would you rather our veterans, who have an unemployment rate of 34% work for Walmart and McDonald's earning poverty level wages or USPS making a living wage? As far as your comment "Meanwhile, a U.S. postal letter carrier, with no supervisory or hazardous duty, makes approximately $80,000 a year when all benefits are factored in." I agree you can't compare what a letter carrier does to what a soldier does, however, they deliver to EVERY HOME in AMERICA 6 days a week. Even in areas the cops are scared to patrol.

Have we in Hillsborough County lost our minds, or is it only our school board? No wonder why so many families are attending the IndoctriNation premiere at the Tampa Convention Center this Friday. CAIR should keep their indoctrination to themselves.

(cont'd from comments 1 & 2):

Lastly, you characterize the "neutrality" policy as a specifically curricular one, when the actual wording of the policy in no way supports that assertion. The phrases "in the course of their professional duties" and "shall remain neutral on matters of sexual orientation" are far too broad to be perceived as applying strictly to curricular discussions. Teachers' duties in middle and even high school include supervising students in the hallways, on breaks, at lunch, and much more. These are the times when "matters" related to sexual orientation can arise - matters such as bullying, name-calling, and more. This policy may not have "caused' any bullying, but it was certainly worded so poorly as to encourage teachers to look the other way for fear of losing their jobs. That was the author's point.

(cont'd from previous comment):

However, I didn't get the same impression you did regarding the author's attempt to link evangelical christian influences in the district to bullying. The impression I got was that she was linking those religious views in the community to the district's "neutrality" policy, which in turn discouraged teachers from DOING anything about bullying they witnessed. For the kids who felt endangered in their schools, it was as much the perceived official lack of attention to their plight as it was the actual bullying which caused them distress.

Ms. Higgins -

For purposes of full disclosure, I will state up front that I am neither Christian nor politically conservative. I assume you and I do not share the same beliefs regarding homosexuality. However, I did agree with many of the points you made regarding the gaps in logical reasoning in the Rolling Stone article in question.

For instance, you are likely correct in that conservative teachers who espoused their views on homosexuality openly in the classroom likely would be castigated and perhaps even disciplined by the administration. I believe the best solution is for teachers to keep their personal views to themselves, regardless of where those views fall on any ideological spectrum.

I also noticed, as you pointed out, that the unflattering physical characterization of the P.A.L. representative was the only one of its kind in the article. It was unnecessary to the story and obviously intended to bias readers against the woman so described.

I will make sure to send a copy of this article to every one of the 26 senators who blasted the Komen Foundation for their decision to no longer offer financial support to Planned Parenthood. I dare them to make this a political issue. It is obviously a human rights issue, an issue of conscience, which seems to be in short supply on both sides of the aisle these days. Thanks for your honesty.
