When I first tell people the brief outline of the Iolaire, I almost always receive the same reply. ‘Oh! But it was New Year’s Eve and they would have been drunk!’I feel it is important to make it clear that from the results of the enquiry and the testimonies from the passengers and crew on Iolaire who survived … there is no mention of the crew being intoxicated. The following is the story of the Iolaire based on the facts and the stories told to me by the people from the Island of Lewis … this story is written from the heart … for the hundreds of people who have spoken to me with pain in their hearts concerning the disaster of the Iolaire … I hope my story will bring to you what I have been asked to do … to recreate an experience … a journey through time which may bring some enlightenment to one of life’s enigmas, through the perceptions of the reader’s own feelings … please relax and place a drink by your side … be it coffee, tea or a wee dram and … and close the door … forget the world with all its statistics, wars and problems … come with me now and hold tightly my hand … for where we will go and where they have been was not a nice place to be, but what they experienced should never be forgotten and must be learnt from …
