Descriptions of grief, rage, suicidalMoreJulie Messinger, a young mother, reflects with sarcastic, bitter humor on her emotionally and sexually barren relationship with her graphic illustrator husband, Richard, as he lies in a coma in a hospital bed.

Descriptions of grief, rage, suicidal depression, and drug usage are laced with her own sexual frustrations, fantasies and masturbatory habits. Her confusions are compounded when she finds a diary describing her husbands affairs, and some of the so-called friends visiting the hospital are not what they appear to be. The book is based on author Goulds own experience of finding, and cracking, her husbands black book diary after his sudden death following surgery. Such Good Friends, Goulds first novel, published in 1970, spent seven weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and hit a nerve for many women and men, with its frank depiction of womens sexual and emotional needs.

Some referred to it as a female version of Philip Roths Portnoys Complaint. The book was quickly filmed by director Otto Preminger and starred Dyan Cannon. It was released in 1971 to generally excellent reviews.
