Part one deals with the protagonist (Ted) at a very young age. During this time the boy’s family disintegrates: his father is drawn into an affair with a black woman which results in a discarded baby brother Ted would not know until his adult life. His sister finds her innocence a pawn at the hands of a predatory teacher whom Ted is forced to confront, a decision that will link their fates forever.

Worst of all, Ted’s brother’s destinies are tragically intertwined when they join two opposing gangs at war in the streets. When his family abandons him, young Ted is forced to fend for himself, struggling against the void-filling allure of drugs and gangs. But a fatal mistake will be the final gesture linking this boy to a hard life in the streets.Part two of the book follows Ted when he is released from prison after a long stint.

His childhood was stripped from him, and blending back into the real world proves more challenging then survival behind bars. Ted must face the consequences of all his actions as a child, including the struggle to rediscover his fractured family after a long absence. Will Ted be able to face his brother after he committed a crime so heinous and instrumental in the destruction of the family? Will Ted be able to face the fate he thrust upon the predatory teacher whom he once despised?

Will he be able to face his mother and sister who abandoned him without regret? But ultimately, will Ted find penance from the crime that destroyed the lives of others and landed him in jail?
